How do I become a cheerleader? (and other Frequently Asked Questions)

That’s right. You’re not the first person to ask. Here’s what those who came before you asked and, of course, the answers.

I have no experience but have seen Bring It On, can I please be a cheerleader?

The sport is developing so fast now that it’s becoming more and more difficult to get involved at a completely basic level. That said, if you have some gymnastic, dance or even other sporting experience we would still like to hear from you as prior to tryouts there are a number of open sessions you can attend to get an idea of what’s involved.

I am under 18 but there are no squads in my area, can I please join yours?

The London Rockets only take females 18 and over but if you really want to be a cheerleader then we suggest you talk to your teachers to help make it happen in your school. Our coaches can even help your school set up a starter squad - just point your teachers towards our in-schools sessions page for more information.

How come you don’t take guys?

The London Rockets are an All Girl team but send us an email anyway and we’ll point you in the right direction if you’re a guy wanting to get involved in the sport!

What’s involved in becoming a competitive cheerleader?

So glad you asked. Hard work and a lot of determination. We practice every Wednesday and take on extra training when necessary to prepare for competitions. Committing to the squad is a serious undertaking and we ask that you consider this when you tryout.

What’s involved in the tryout?

Trying out for the London Rockets isn’t like what you might have seen in any movie about cheerleading or even on Cheerleader Nation – we keep the session open and assess you as you work with established members of the team. If you are invited to tryout you can expect to receive advanced notice of what we’ll be looking at as well as an opportunity to train with us prior to the tryout.

How do I get to tryout?

This season the Coaching Team are only taking applications from ex university and all star cheerleaders, gymnasts and dancers. We will consider athletes with a competitive record in other sports such as women’s hockey and rugby.

Email cheerleadingrocks@googlemail.com for more info and an application form.

  2. First of all, you can’t just “become” a cheerleader. It takes A LOT of effort!! I’ve been cheering for a long time now and now my younger sis wants to be one to. I’m helping her and all she can to is a cartwheel…. trust me its HARD!! So if you are trying out for an ALLSTAR team you should go to the gym, and sign up for tumbling classes (2 times a wk should help a lot but once is fine), and (if avaliable) jumps and motions classes. If you think you will fly, get into a stunting class. If you are trying out for your school team, figure out where they practice. FIgure out if you can sit in on a practice. If they practice at an ALLSTAR gym get into all the classes above. Even if they don’t have an ALLSTAR gym to practice at, find a local one and do all of the above. If you can’t get into a tumbling class, DO NOT try and teach yourself to tumble, it will not result well. Practice your jumps EVERYDAY and do simple streches such as splits. It helps to practice jumps in front of a mirror!!! You can see what you are doing wrong… ALWAYS: keep your chest up, toes pointed and you will go HIGH!!! PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!!!!!!

  3. I own a total fitness facility. I will be training a local high school competition squad. What are some particular exercises in the gym/resistance training, weight training, plyometric training would you suggest when training them? your answers will be appreciated. Sincerely, Colleene Weiser
